A brutal assault in Perumpathu, near Nanguneri, Tirunelveli district, has left two men dead and five others injured. The incident, which occurred on the night of March 2nd, involved a gang of approximately nine individuals armed with lethal weapons, arriving on three motorcycles. The deceased have been identified as John Mark, a 42-year-old local resident with disabilities, and Trinath Katta, a 50-year-old migrant worker from Odisha.
Seven individuals have been apprehended in connection with the attack. Police are actively pursuing leads to locate two additional absconding suspects. The investigation has begun to reveal a complex background, with early reports suggesting the violence may be linked to caste tensions, potentially fueled by the recent public glorification of a figure named ‘Manalmedu’ Shankar.
Conflicting Details Emerge
Initial reports indicate the assailants indiscriminately attacked several individuals gathered near a roadside teashop. While John Mark and Trinath Katta sustained fatal injuries, several others were also wounded and required medical attention. The injured received initial treatment at the Nanguneri Government Hospital before being transferred to the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital for further care.

A point of contention arose regarding the handover of John Mark's body. His family, reportedly initially refusing to accept it until decisive action was taken against the perpetrators, eventually received it on Monday, six days after the incident. In contrast, Trinath Katta's family accepted and cremated his body the following day.
Potential Motives and Official Responses
The investigation, according to police accounts, is pointing towards 'caste revenge' as a potential motive, possibly triggered by posters glorifying 'Manalmedu' Shankar. This individual, described as a lorry driver killed in a police encounter in February 2007, was reportedly facing numerous criminal charges, including those related to murder, abduction, and drug smuggling.

A section of the local community has expressed concern over the perceived disparity in relief efforts, noting that John's family received ex-gratia payments and promises of housing, while no such assistance was immediately offered to Trinath Katta's family.

Political figures, including the Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, M. Appavu, and the District Collector, visited the injured at the hospital. Opposition leaders have strongly condemned the incident, alleging a breakdown in law and order within the state.
The Night of the Attack
On the evening of March 2nd, the gang, described by witnesses as masked, descended upon Perumpathu. The assailants, traveling on three two-wheelers, reportedly unleashed a violent assault using sickles. The suddenness and ferocity of the attack left the local community in a state of shock and fear, leading to an eerie silence in the aftermath.

Background: A History of Violence?
The 'Manalmedu' Shankar connection suggests a deeper, potentially long-standing undercurrent of conflict within the region. The public display of posters honouring an individual with a documented criminal past, particularly one who died in a police encounter, can be interpreted as a provocative act, potentially escalating existing tensions between different community groups. The rapid arrests suggest a swift police response, yet the underlying issues fueling such violence remain a subject of ongoing inquiry.
