Morgan Nelson, a 25-year-old hooker, has inked a new deal with the Cornish Pirates for the 26/27 season. This move signifies a deliberate effort by the club to retain experienced talent as they aim for a stronger showing in the Championship. Nelson's return follows a stint with Gallagher Premiership side Gloucester, where he spent time in their academy after nearly four years with the Pirates. Nelson’s previous tenure saw him score 19 tries in 49 appearances for the club, marking him as a significant offensive threat.
The club’s joint head coach, Alan Paver, emphasized Nelson’s value, stating his accumulated Championship experience and the added dimension from his time at a top-level environment are crucial. Nelson himself expressed enthusiasm for the club’s direction, wanting to be part of their developmental journey. This contract renewal is part of a broader wave of signings intended to signal the club’s ambition.

Nelson's track record at the Pirates includes being a leading try-scorer. In the 2024-25 season alone, he contributed 10 tries in the Championship. He has been described as a hardened Championship performer, vastly different from his earlier days as a university player. Paver also highlighted Nelson's solid set-piece play, collision prowess, and ball-carrying abilities with effective evasion. Over his past two contract periods with the Pirates, Nelson accumulated 41 games.
This agreement places Nelson alongside other forwards who have recently committed to the club, including Hugh Bokenham and Will Gibson. Another notable acquisition is centre Chester Ribbons, a 22-year-old from Exeter, who brings physicality and skill, having played 11 times for the Pirates while dual-registered. The club views Ribbons as an exciting prospect, capable of playing multiple midfield positions and offering both ball-playing and ball-carrying contributions. Ben Cambriani, a 25-year-old Welshman, also agreed terms, adding further depth.
