Melbourne's annual Moomba Parade, a sprawling celebration of community and culture, saw hundreds of performers and dozens of groups fill the city streets. However, the spectacle was marred by a significant dispute leading to the withdrawal of a North Macedonian cultural group. The Federation of Macedonian Cultural and Artistic Associations of Victoria (FOMKUD) pulled out of the parade hours before it began, citing a ban on displaying a specific symbol.

The City of Melbourne had issued a directive to all participating groups, stipulating that only official national flags or organizational insignia were permitted. This rule, applied universally, was intended to prevent overt political messaging within the parade. Despite discussions between the council and FOMKUD, the ban on the "Star of Kutlesh," also known as the "Vergina Sun," remained in place. FOMKUD described the decision as "heartbreaking," asserting that participating without the disputed flag would compromise a "key part of the community's identity."

The "Vergina Sun," an ancient symbol with roots in Greek history, has become a point of contention. Greece views this symbol as an integral part of its cultural heritage, having registered it as a protected national emblem. Its use is prevalent in Greece, particularly in relation to regions named Macedonia. This historical and national significance underpins the sensitivity surrounding its public display.

Lord Mayor Nicholas Reece expressed disappointment over FOMKUD's withdrawal, reiterating that Moomba's policy strictly allowed only national or organizational flags. He stated that the council and the federation had engaged in talks, but the rules regarding flags were clear. Meanwhile, a Greek dance group, the Manasis School of Greek Dance and Culture, participated in the parade, showcasing regional traditions. Significantly, some reports indicate that participants from the Greek community, who returned to Moomba after a 31-year absence, also waved a flag bearing the "Sun of Vergina" alongside Greek, Australian, and Cypriot flags, conveying a message of "unity, acceptance, and love."

The event, touted as Australia's largest free community festival, showcased a "kaleidoscope of colour and cultures" with elaborate floats and diverse performances. Attendance records were reportedly broken across the festival weekend, with thousands lining the parade route.
