Mookie Betts, a prominent figure for the Los Angeles Dodgers, has begun a minor league rehabilitation assignment with their Triple-A affiliate, Oklahoma City. The move, announced on Thursday, signals a significant step in his recovery from a strained right oblique. Betts is slated to play on Friday and Saturday, marking the five-week anniversary of his injury sustained on April 4 while running the bases. His participation in these games indicates he is progressing well, potentially paving the way for his return to the Dodgers' lineup as early as Monday.
The organization has reportedly been cautious with Betts's recovery process, adjusting drills and batting practice based on his physical response. Reports suggest that if his rehab assignment proceeds smoothly over the weekend, he could be available for the Dodgers' three-game series against the San Francisco Giants beginning Monday. This potential return could be brief, with some sources indicating the assignment may only consist of these two games.

Before embarking on his rehab assignment, Betts faced live pitching at Dodger Stadium on Thursday. This was his first time doing so since being placed on the 10-day injured list on April 5. His initial performance this season, before the injury, saw him hitting .179 with two home runs and seven RBIs through the team's first eight games. The Dodgers recalled Kim from the minors during Betts's absence. Simultaneously, Kiké Hernández is also currently with Oklahoma City, having played two games at third base as part of his own rehabilitation.
