The veteran actress, known for her role as Olivia Walton, described a demeaning encounter with two well-known actresses that has lingered with her.
Michael Learned, the Emmy-winning actress celebrated for her portrayal of Olivia Walton, recently detailed a mortifying experience involving two unnamed, high-profile actresses. The incident, which occurred in an elevator, left Learned feeling humiliated and regretful of her silence. Speaking on the 'Still Here Hollywood' podcast with Steve Kmetko, Learned characterized the pair as "so damn rude," recounting how they disparaged her iconic role on 'The Waltons' while she was present.
"They were making fun of me and I didn't have the chutzpah or whatever to call them out on it so I stood there and in horrible humiliation and said nothing," Learned stated, recalling the event years later.
Learned expressed enduring frustration over the encounter, noting, "I still haven't gotten over it obviously because I'm talking about it but they were just so rude." She indicated that should her memoir ever materialize, she intends to name the actresses involved. The star, who overcame significant personal struggles including alcohol addiction, has continued her acting career well into her eighties, with her most recent work including the 2024 film 'Our Crossroads'.

A Lingering Shadow
The actress's account highlights a moment of vulnerability, exacerbated by her personal circumstances at the time. Learned revealed she was navigating a difficult divorce from a husband of many years when the elevator incident took place. The contrast between the perceived wholesomeness of 'The Waltons', a show that earned her three Emmy Awards, and the harsh reality of Hollywood's social dynamics appears to have deeply affected her.
Learned, who also received an Emmy for her role in the series 'Nurse', made a notable public appearance in late 2025, where the podcast conversation occurred. Despite the lingering sting of the elevator encounter, she remains active in the industry, a testament to her resilience. The actress has previously spoken about her reasons for leaving 'The Waltons', describing the show's repetitive nature as having become "boring" for her, a decision she maintained she did not regret.
