TORONTO -
Veteran pitcher Max Scherzer, recently acquired by the Toronto Blue Jays, made his initial spring training appearance on Saturday, facing the Philadelphia Phillies. In his debut, the 41-year-old right-hander pitched four scoreless innings, allowing no hits.

The performance saw Scherzer throw just 40 pitches, with 29 of them landing in the strike zone. He registered one strikeout and issued one walk during his time on the mound. This outing comes shortly after Scherzer rejoined the Blue Jays. Manager John Schneider confirmed Scherzer's start against the Phillies.

Scherzer's fastball averaged 94.0 miles per hour, with a peak velocity of 95.8 mph. He utilized a mix of five pitches while actively challenging hitters within the strike zone. Scherzer indicated he feels prepared and expects to be ready for the season's commencement. His efforts on Saturday have fueled optimism that he will be ready for regular-season duty sooner rather than later.

The Blue Jays are reportedly banking on Scherzer's potential upside, believing it remains intact. His spring debut is seen by some as strong evidence supporting this belief. Scherzer's career statistics include a 3.22 ERA over 19 seasons, with a record of 221-117. Last season, with the Blue Jays, he posted a 5.19 ERA in 17 starts, contributing to the team's postseason efforts.

Scherzer's acquisition by the Blue Jays occurred last month via a one-year agreement. His contributions last season were noted to extend beyond statistical performance, encompassing his competitive drive and postseason contributions, where he pitched 14.1 innings across three appearances, striking out 11 batters.
