A recent decision to appoint retired IPS officer Daljit Singh Chaudhary as the Vice-Chancellor of the National Sports University (NSU) in Manipur has plunged the institution into a political and public dispute. Opposition parties and a local Meitei organization are raising serious objections, alleging a breach of established recruitment protocols and the prescribed qualifications mandated by the university's governing act. This appointment, occurring at India's sole national sports university, has sparked questions regarding transparency in the selection process.
The core of the contention lies in the assertion that Chaudhary's appointment transgresses existing rules, potentially undermining the academic integrity of a significant national institution . The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee, through its president Keisham Meghachandra Singh, has framed the action as a continuation of a political strategy to disregard academic standards.
Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, however, has been observed inspecting the NSU's infrastructure development, a move occurring concurrently with the controversy. This visit to the campus at Koutruk, Haraothel, aimed to review construction progress and engage with university officials, seemingly operating independently of the brewing political storm.
