State Government Allocates 100 Acres for ARAI Centre, Costing ₹500 Crore
The Karnataka government has officially allocated 100 acres of land in the Mandya district for the establishment of an advanced facility by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI). This significant development, announced by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah during the presentation of the State Budget, comes with an estimated project cost of ₹500 crore. The facility is intended to be a hub for advanced construction and infrastructure testing.
The move follows persistent inquiries and criticism directed at Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, who represents the Mandya Lok Sabha constituency. Kumaraswamy had previously stated his intention to bring major industries and facilities to the region if land was provided by the state government. This land allocation appears to be a direct response to those pressures, positioning the ARAI centre as a key deliverable for the Mandya constituency.

Inter-Governmental Coordination and Land Identification
Details indicate that Minister for Large and Medium Industries M.B. Patil has been actively involved, informing Union Minister Kumaraswamy that the designated 100 acres are ready for the proposed ARAI plant. Patil also conveyed that ARAI authorities could directly liaise with state officials for further coordination. The identified land is situated in Basaralu, approximately 30 kilometers from Mandya city.

Prior to the official budget announcement, the state administration had initiated steps to identify suitable land. On January 21, the Additional Chief Secretary of the State Revenue Department had directed the Mandya Deputy Commissioner to pinpoint appropriate plots for the project.
Political Undercurrents Shape Project Announcement
The establishment of the ARAI facility has become entangled with political exchanges, particularly within the Mandya district. Kumaraswamy, facing questions from some local MLAs regarding his contributions to the region since his election, has presented the ARAI centre as a substantial accomplishment. This has prompted a visible engagement from the state government, with the Chief Minister announcing the land allotment in the budget.

Meanwhile, M.B. Patil has also engaged in separate discussions concerning infrastructure development. He recently met with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav to propose extending the Mumbai–Pune high-speed rail corridor to Bengaluru, aiming to foster economic integration and industrial expansion. These discussions also included requests for enhanced rail services connecting Bengaluru to other parts of Karnataka.
