A stranger established an unofficial residence in the basement of a Harding University professor's home in Searcy, Arkansas, only coming to light after the family observed a series of peculiar occurrences. The discovery unfolded on April 29, when Sharon Hoggatt entered a storage closet beneath the basement stairs and found the unidentified man. The individual, later identified as Preston Landis, 41, identified himself as homeless and exited the premises without incident as law enforcement arrived. He was subsequently arrested.
Authorities from the White County Sheriff's Office took Landis into custody, charging him with residential burglary and theft of property. Investigators believe Landis gained access to the home sometime in the preceding week, utilizing a storage closet under the basement stairs as a makeshift sleeping area.
The Hoggatt family's suspicions began to crystallize after noticing discrepancies within their own home. Dutch Hoggatt, a professor at Harding University, first flagged the oddities when a pair of his shoes, habitually kept by the back door, vanished. This initial observation was compounded by further anomalies: items were observed missing, and furniture appeared to have been rearranged. These cumulative strange happenings prompted the family to investigate more thoroughly.

According to accounts, the home's security was compromised between the time Dutch Hoggatt and his wife left the residence and their return, with the basement door reportedly being unlocked. One of the family members, Mark Gregory, recounted confronting the individual in the basement, issuing commands for him to emerge. Reports suggest Landis indicated severe weather in the area as a factor in seeking shelter. Despite the unsettling nature of the discovery, the Hoggatt family has reportedly expressed a lack of anger towards their unexpected lodger.
