A 'AAA action-adventure' video game adaptation of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin has finally surfaced, three years after its initial announcement. PlatinumGames, known for titles like Bayonetta and Nier: Automata, is handling development. A teaser trailer was revealed on Friday at the Summer Game Fest, though it offered no gameplay footage, relying entirely on CGI.

The game targets a mature audience, echoing the grim narrative of the original comic series. The source material, released in 2020, depicts a dystopian future New York City where only one Turtle remains to avenge his fallen brothers against the Foot Clan. The game is confirmed for PC and consoles, but a release date remains unannounced.

Shifting Development, Familiar Tone
Paramount Games Studio is overseeing the project. Previously, in 2023, the adaptation was described as a "dark" third-person action role-playing game in the vein of God of War. The current developer change suggests a potential shift in direction or scope. The original comic, based on an early concept by TMNT creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, is noted for its brutality and willingness to kill off established characters, a tone the game developers aim to meet.

PlatinumGames has stated their intention to "meet the bar" set by their previous acclaimed works, hinting at a focus on polished combat mechanics. Alongside game development, Paramount is also rolling out a limited-edition BossLogic merchandise collection tied to The Last Ronin.

Paramount Games Studio appears to be prioritizing game development as a significant content pillar, positioning it alongside their film and television ventures. This is also evident in their publishing of the recently delayed Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game.
