SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Nearly three decades after Kristin Smart vanished, investigators have concluded a recent search of her convicted killer’s mother's property, revealing the detection of compounds associated with human decomposition. However, Kristin Smart's remains have not been located, according to San Luis Obispo County Sheriff Ian Parkinson. The intensive search operation, which employed advanced scientific equipment, spanned multiple days at the Arroyo Grande home of Susan Flores, mother of Paul Flores, who was convicted of Smart's murder.
Investigators have detected substances indicating a decomposing human body at Susan Flores' home, yet her remains remain unfound.
The search warrant, executed on Wednesday, May 7th, 2026, targeted Susan Flores' residence. Authorities confirmed the use of ground-penetrating radar and other methods to scan and sample the grounds. This renewed investigative effort stems from recent findings that prompted the warrant, though details surrounding the specific triggers for this latest search remain undisclosed. Sheriff Parkinson indicated that the work at the property is now complete.

Decades of Dead Ends and Lingering Questions
Kristin Smart, a freshman at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, disappeared in 1996 after attending an off-campus party. She was last seen walking with fellow student Paul Flores, who allegedly offered to help her back to her dormitory. Flores was convicted of her murder in 2022, receiving a sentence of 25 years to life. Despite his conviction, Smart's body has never been recovered.
Paul Flores’ father, Ruben Flores, was previously acquitted of charges related to aiding in the concealment of Smart's body. During searches conducted at Ruben Flores’ property three years ago, archaeologists reportedly discovered blood and a soil disturbance consistent with a casket. Susan Flores has not been formally charged in connection with the crime, and her family has consistently maintained that they do not know Kristin Smart's whereabouts.
The Smart family has expressed gratitude to the detectives for their sustained commitment to the case, acknowledging the mix of renewed pain and hope that accompanies each new development. Sheriff's officials have reiterated their dedication to bringing Kristin Smart home to her family. Paul Flores is reportedly working on an appeal of his conviction.
