John Wall, a five-time NBA All-Star, has been appointed President of Basketball Operations at Howard University. The announcement sees the former NBA guard transition from player to administrator at the historically Black university, a move that solidifies his return to the Washington, D.C. area.
Wall's new position marks a significant shift in his post-playing career, moving into a leadership role within a collegiate athletic program. The collaboration with Howard began earlier this year, stemming from his engagement as an honorary captain for a game in January. This initial involvement reportedly sparked discussions about a more permanent partnership.
Wall, who officially retired from the NBA in August 2025 after an 11-year career, will collaborate with Howard coach Kenny Blakeney and general manager Daniel Marks. Marks, also noted as an NIL strategist, was part of the initial brainstorming sessions that led to Wall’s current role. Wall’s NBA tenure was significantly impacted by injuries, particularly in the latter half of his career, limiting his games played in recent seasons. His final NBA averages stood at 18.7 points and 8.9 assists per game.

The former lottery pick, chosen first overall in the 2010 draft, brings considerable NBA experience to the Division I program. His playing career, though marred by significant injuries including an Achilles tear, also saw him achieve multiple accolades, including five consecutive All-Star selections, an All-NBA third team nod in 2017, and an All-Defensive second team selection in 2015. Following his retirement, Wall had been working as an analyst for Amazon Prime Video during the recently concluded 2025/26 season.
