Jesy Nelson's nine-month-old twin daughters, Ocean and Story, are currently receiving further medical examinations at Great Ormond Street Hospital. The singer shared this update on Thursday, as her public advocacy for broader newborn screening for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) appears to be gaining traction. Nelson has expressed hope that her children will defy the odds with ongoing treatment, aiming for a longer life expectancy.

The development coincides with a significant achievement for Nelson's campaigning efforts, with the NHS announcing plans to implement routine newborn screening for SMA in England, a move Nelson has strongly advocated for following her daughters' diagnosis.

Nelson revealed in January that her twins had been diagnosed with SMA Type 1, a severe, rare muscle-wasting condition. This diagnosis has spurred her to campaign for earlier detection, stating that the delay in diagnosis for her children means they may never be able to walk or regain full neck strength. The singer has openly discussed the emotional toll of her babies' medical procedures, describing them as leaving her feeling as though she is hurting them. The twins have been pictured wearing leg splints, indicating the physical challenges associated with their condition.

Nelson's push for increased SMA awareness and screening gained momentum when a petition related to the cause reached over 100,000 signatures, triggering a debate in the House of Commons. Health Secretary Wes Streeting has since brought forward plans to screen over 400,000 babies annually for SMA in England. This development has been noted as particularly significant given the progress Ukraine has made in implementing newborn SMA screening even amidst wartime conditions. Nelson has voiced her regret that such screening was not available for her own children and others diagnosed later.

The singer, previously a member of the group Little Mix, had also navigated prenatal health concerns. In April 2025, she shared updates on her unborn twins, who were diagnosed with a pre-stage of TTTS (Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome), though a subsequent surgical procedure was reported as successful, and her pregnancy proceeded.
