Toy Designer’s Passing Marks End of an Era for Iconic Figure
Roger Sweet, the man credited with conjuring the muscular form of the He-Man action figure, has died at the age of 91. His passing, confirmed by his wife, Marlene Sweet, occurred early Tuesday morning, April 28th. The cause of death was complications stemming from a prolonged battle with dementia.
Sweet’s hands shaped the prototype for He-Man, a figure that would launch the 'Masters of the Universe' franchise, encompassing cartoons and, most recently, an upcoming feature film.
His wife revealed his struggle with the degenerative condition earlier this year, initiating a GoFundMe campaign to address the escalating costs of his specialized care. Recent months had seen a marked decline in his health, leading to his admission to a care facility. A fall earlier in the year, which resulted in two brain bleeds and memory loss, underscored the severity of his condition.

The Genesis of a Hero
Sweet, a toy designer who spent his formative years at Mattel during the 1970s and 80s, is widely recognized for developing the He-Man concept. Accounts suggest he began by modifying a 'Big Jim' action figure, then bulking it up with clay to create the imposing physique that would define the character. This initial design laid the groundwork for the wildly popular 'He-Man and the Masters of the Universe' franchise, which exploded onto screens and toy shelves shortly after.
Beyond his most famous creation, Sweet also contributed to other Mattel products, including designing accessories for the iconic Barbie doll line.
The legacy of He-Man continues to resonate. A new 'Masters of the Universe' film, starring a cast including Nicholas Galitzine, Camila Mendes, Jared Leto, Alison Brie, and Idris Elba, is slated for release on June 5th.
