Mumbai, India – Actress Hansika Motwani has initiated legal action against her estranged sister-in-law, television personality Muskan Nancy James, filing a defamation suit in a Mumbai sessions court. Motwani is seeking Rs 2 crore in damages, along with a court order to prevent James from making further public statements and a demand for a public apology.

The core of the dispute centers on accusations of domestic violence made by Muskan Nancy James against Hansika Motwani and her brother, Prashant Motwani. Motwani, through her advocate Adnan Shaikh, alleges that James made these defamatory claims on social media as a tactic to evade repayment of a purported ₹27 lakh loan. The suit contends that James borrowed this sum during her marriage to Prashant Motwani and has failed to return it despite repeated attempts at recovery. Motwani maintains her limited involvement in her brother's marriage and asserts the accusations lack merit.

Earlier, Hansika Motwani had approached the Bombay High Court seeking to quash a First Information Report (FIR) filed against her. The High Court has issued a notice regarding this plea.

The Allegations and Counter-Claims
Muskan Nancy James has accused Hansika Motwani and her mother, Jyoti Motwani, of interfering in her marriage to Prashant Motwani. These alleged interferences, according to James, caused significant marital discord. Reports suggest James also claimed her mother-in-law demanded expensive gifts and subjected her to abuse, contributing to her developing Bell's Palsy. James has further alleged cruelty, physical assault, and criminal intimidation.

Motwani, however, denies these accusations, stating that the claims are false and defamatory. Her legal team argues that the criminal prosecution initiated by James is an exaggerated account of matrimonial disputes and is motivated by a desire to avoid repaying the loan. Motwani asserts she had minimal interaction with her brother's marital affairs and did not reside with the couple.

A Pattern of Public Statements
The legal battle has unfolded against a backdrop of public statements and social media activity from both parties. Muskan Nancy James has reportedly posted cryptic messages on social media, some of which have been interpreted as veiled references to the ongoing family conflict, particularly around the time of Hansika Motwani's divorce proceedings. These posts have included sentiments about "truth revealing" and not wanting to be associated with "someone's absolutely fake world."
Motwani, in response to the FIR filed by James, has also sought to have it quashed, arguing the allegations are baseless and arise from an exaggerated matrimonial dispute. The actress's legal representatives emphasize her limited role in her brother's marriage.
Broader Context of Family Dispute
The defamation suit is part of a wider legal entanglement between the Motwani family members. Muskan Nancy James had previously filed an FIR against her husband Prashant Motwani, his mother Jyoti Motwani, and Hansika Motwani. This FIR detailed allegations of domestic violence, cruelty, and financial exploitation. Reports indicate that Muskan and Prashant have been living separately for a period preceding these events. While Hansika Motwani had limited involvement in her brother's wedding festivities, the current legal actions suggest a significant rupture in familial relations.
