WASHINGTON D.C. - Authorities believe the individual who discharged a firearm at the annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner on Saturday night was primarily targeting Donald Trump and members of his administration. Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that "preliminary findings" point towards this conclusion, based on the suspect's writings and communications.
The 31-year-old suspect, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, is expected to face federal charges including assault of a federal officer, discharging a firearm, and attempting to kill a federal officer. Investigations are ongoing, with officials examining writings allegedly sent by Allen to his family shortly before the incident. These writings reportedly refer to himself as a "Friendly Federal Assassin" and express grievances against Trump administration policies.
The shooting occurred as guests, including President Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and numerous journalists and dignitaries, were present at the Washington Hilton. Shots were heard near a security checkpoint, prompting a swift response from Secret Service agents who evacuated Trump and other key figures.

While law enforcement officials have indicated a strong belief that Trump administration officials were the intended targets, the exact motive remains under scrutiny. Blanche noted that the investigation is "quite preliminary" and declined to speculate on potential connections to ongoing international conflicts, such as the US-Israel war in Iran. The suspect was reportedly armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and knives. He is not cooperating with investigators.
Allen, of Torrance, California, was taken into custody at the scene. Federal agents were later observed at a residence associated with him in Torrance. Authorities stated that the suspect was not previously known to the D.C. police department.
President Trump, who attended the dinner for the first time as president, later held a press conference where he called for unity. He also indicated that the visit of King Charles to Washington would proceed as planned, despite the security incident. Trump also shared video footage of the suspect on his social media platform.
