Sydney, Australia – Gout Gout delivered a stunning performance at the Australian Athletics Championships on Sunday, clocking 19.67 seconds in the men's 200-meter final. This electrifying run not only secured his second consecutive national title but also established a new world under-20 record. The 18-year-old's time legally broke the 20-second barrier for the first time in his career, surpassing his previous Australian record of 20.02 seconds.
The sprinter's new mark places him ahead of Usain Bolt's under-20 best time, marking a significant moment in Australian athletics history. This victory occurred in the absence of rival Lachlan Kennedy, who withdrew from the 200m event after securing the 100m national title with a sub-10-second performance.
Gout Gout's performance was described as "drawn from the future" and left onlookers "dumbfounded." He had already qualified for the final with a time significantly faster than his competitors. Aidan Murphy also broke the Australian record with a 19.88-second finish, while Calab Law secured third place in 20.21 seconds.

Background and Previous Achievements
The young athlete, born in Queensland to parents from South Sudan, has a history of strong performances. Last season, he ran a wind-assisted 19.84 seconds over the 200m. Prior to Sunday's race, his personal best stood at 20.02 seconds, a time he equalled last year and which also served as the Australian record. He has also previously achieved a wind-aided 9.99 seconds in the 100m, though these times do not count as official records due to wind assistance.
Gout Gout has been a rising star for some time, having made his senior global championships debut in Tokyo and previously holding the Oceania record for the 200m. His track record includes impressive performances in school meets, such as a 400m victory in 46.18 seconds in October 2025. Despite past achievements, Gout Gout has indicated he has "more in the tank" and is targeting further milestones, including a potential showdown with American sprinter Noah Lyles. He has also indicated a focus on the 200m at the upcoming world under-20 championships, opting out of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games to prioritize this event.
