The New York Giants and star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence II have hit an impasse in contract extension talks, leading the team to explore trade options with other clubs. This development surfaces just before the NFL Draft next week, with negotiations failing to materialize for a new deal.
Lawrence had previously requested a trade on April 6, following stalled extension discussions. Sources indicate that the Giants have engaged in trade talks and will continue to do so as the draft approaches, likely serving as a point to gauge interest and make a final decision.
General Manager Joe Schoen had previously stated that there was no set deadline to resolve the situation, while also echoing Head Coach John Harbaugh's sentiment that the team wanted Lawrence to remain. However, his remarks also suggested less certainty about a new contract being agreed upon. Lawrence has been absent from the team's offseason workout program.

Lawrence, a seven-year veteran, has achieved three Pro Bowl selections and two All-Pro nods. His career statistics include 341 tackles, 30.5 sacks, 103 QB hits, 40 tackles for loss, and 15 pass breakups across 109 games. Despite his contributions, his current contract has no guaranteed salary remaining and ranks 11th in average annual value among defensive tackles.
Any team acquiring Lawrence would be responsible for the compensation sent to the Giants and would also need to finalize a new contract with the player. The Giants hold the fifth pick in the first round of the upcoming draft and are not expected to select a defensive tackle with that selection. Their only other pick in the first two days is the 37th overall selection.
The situation presents a crossroads for the Giants as they transition into a new era under Harbaugh, with the potential loss of a key defensive player. Lawrence's potential availability is expected to generate significant interest from teams looking to bolster their defensive front ahead of the draft.
