Sherrone Moore, the recently dismissed head football coach for the University of Michigan, has received an 18-month probation sentence stemming from a confrontation at a staffer's apartment on December 10. The resolution avoids jail time for Moore, who had faced more serious charges including felony home invasion, stalking, and illegal entry.
The plea agreement saw charges of trespassing and malicious use of a telecommunications device, both misdemeanors, as the final counts. Moore had previously pleaded no contest to these charges in March. As part of his probation, Moore is mandated to avoid any contact with the former staffer, Paige Shiver, and must continue mental health treatment. He also faces suspended sentences of 180 days and 30 days, which will be waived upon successful completion of his probation. If Moore violates the terms, he faces imprisonment.

Judge Cedric Simpson delivered a stern rebuke during Tuesday's sentencing, stating, "Frankly, Mr. Moore, you had no right to do what you did… you had no right to spread your pain to her." The judge further emphasized that the victim's stance played a significant role in the leniency, noting, "the person saving Moore from the 'full wrath of this court is the one you betrayed." Moore was also ordered to pay over $1,000 in court costs and probation fees.
Moore's legal team argued that he had taken responsibility for his actions and sought treatment. His lawyer, Ellen Michaels, indicated her client had refocused on his family. Moore, 40, stated in court he was relying on his wife and faith, and expressed gratitude to Jesus, his wife, the court, and his lawyer. His wife, Kelli Moore, was present at the sentencing.

The incident occurred after Moore's dismissal from the Michigan program. Authorities reported that Moore went to Shiver's apartment, allegedly blaming her for his firing and threatening self-harm with butter knives he brought to the residence. Moore did not deny an extramarital relationship with Shiver but insisted he did not break into the apartment or threaten her. His legal team maintained he had a door code to Shiver's apartment, a fact acknowledged by investigators and the court. The judge also commented on the police's handling of Moore when he was taken into custody.
Moore took over the Michigan program after Jim Harbaugh's departure for the NFL. His tenure, lasting two seasons, concluded following an internal university investigation that found credible evidence of an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. The university's season record under Moore prior to his firing was 9-3.
