Violence Erupts in Rural NSW Home
Torrington, NSW - An elderly couple, Keith Blessing, 75, and Dianne Blessing, 72, are in critical condition following a violent home invasion early Thursday morning. The couple sustained stab wounds after an alleged intruder, Joshua Dylan Trethewey, 34, broke into their northern NSW home around 12:15 AM.

Authorities report that Trethewey allegedly stabbed Dianne in the chest and Keith in the stomach. The situation escalated when Trethewey, after an initial retreat from the veranda, attempted to re-enter the property. It was at this point that Keith Blessing, despite his injuries, is understood to have discharged a firearm, striking the alleged intruder. Police have confirmed that the alleged attacker did not steal any items from the couple's residence.

Both Blessings were airlifted to Gold Coast University Hospital, where they remain in critical but stable condition. Trethewey has been refused bail and is scheduled to appear in court.

Unanswered Questions and Calls for Legal Review
The motive behind the invasion remains unclear, with police stating they are "baffled" by the circumstances. Detectives do not believe the alleged attacker was known to the couple. The lack of apparent motive and the non-theft aspect of the incident are points of particular focus for investigators.

The terrifying ordeal has, as in similar past events, amplified calls for reforms related to 'castle law' in NSW. Proponents of stronger 'castle law' argue that homeowners should possess more robust legal protections when using force to defend themselves and their property against intruders. This incident is expected to fuel further debate on the matter.
Background
The incident occurred in Torrington, a small rural community located approximately 65 kilometers southwest of Tenterfield. The remote nature of the property is a salient feature of the event. Investigations into the precise sequence of events and the alleged attacker's movements are ongoing.
