Pop icon Dua Lipa has filed a lawsuit against Samsung Electronics, demanding no less than $15 million in damages. The suit, lodged on Friday in the US District Court for the Central District of California, alleges the company unlawfully used a copyrighted photograph of Lipa on its television packaging. The core of the complaint centers on claims of copyright infringement, trademark infringement, and misappropriation of Lipa's likeness, with the singer asserting the unauthorized commercial exploitation of her image to promote and sell Samsung products.
The photograph in question was reportedly taken backstage at the Austin City Limits Music Festival in 2024. According to the legal filing, Samsung began prominently displaying this image on the front of cardboard boxes for various television models starting in 2025. Lipa's legal team contends that this usage was without her permission, consent, or any form of compensation, falsely implying an endorsement of Samsung products. The lawsuit notes that Lipa became aware of this usage around June 2025, citing social media commentary from consumers who admitted to purchasing Samsung TVs specifically because her image was featured on the packaging.

"Ms. Lipa’s face was prominently used for a mass marketing campaign for a consumer product without her knowledge, without consideration, and as to which she had no say, control, or input whatsoever."
Lipa’s legal team further asserts that Samsung's response to her demands to cease and desist usage of the image was "dismissive and callous." The suit claims the company continued to sell the products despite repeated requests to remove the offending packaging. Lipa, who has established numerous commercial partnerships with high-profile brands such as Puma, Versace, Yves Saint Laurent, Apple, and Chanel, has never agreed to a promotional deal with Samsung.
Samsung has not publicly responded to the allegations, and attempts by media outlets to solicit comment have so far been unsuccessful. The legal action underscores a broader concern regarding the commercial use of an individual's image and intellectual property in an increasingly digital and visually saturated marketplace.
