Dermatologist Sandra Lee, known to many as "Dr. Pimple Popper," disclosed that she suffered an ischemic stroke last November while filming the new season of her show, Dr. Pimple Popper: Breaking Out. The incident, which caused a portion of her brain to die, has prompted Lee to reflect on her health and the pressures of her demanding career. The medical emergency led to the temporary halt of production for her television series, with Lee undergoing a two-month recovery period.
Lee, 55, first noticed symptoms while actively engaged in filming her show in Los Angeles. She described feeling unwell, experiencing profuse sweating, and a general sense of not being herself. These sensations escalated, manifesting as difficulty walking down stairs and a noticeable weakness, particularly in her left hand, which she observed would "slowly collapse." Articulation and speech also became a struggle, leading to feelings of embarrassment.

The physician recounted how the experience was initially bewildering. "I thought, ‘Am I having a stroke?’" she admitted. Following medical attention, the diagnosis of an ischemic stroke was confirmed, a realization Lee found difficult to process at the time. She reported a persistent lack of full control and grip strength in her left hand, a sensation she characterized as "very scary" when she felt "not at my best."
Lee has attributed the stroke to a confluence of factors, including chronic stress stemming from her extensive patient load and the pressures associated with her television commitments. She views the ordeal as a stark reminder to prioritize self-care and vigilantly manage her health metrics. Her doctors have indicated that her recovery has been progressing positively, a testament to her resilience since the frightening episode.

Sharing her experience publicly, Lee hopes to help demystify strokes and reduce the associated stigma. She is encouraging others to heed their body's signals and seek medical help promptly when something feels amiss. The new season of Dr. Pimple Popper: Breaking Out is slated to premiere on Lifetime on April 20.
