The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office has announced that Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf will not face criminal charges stemming from an altercation with a Detroit Lions fan, Ryan Kennedy, during a game in December. The office stated that following "an extensive review of all the relevant evidence," no charges would be issued. This decision concludes a months-long investigation that included reviewing videotape of the incident, interviewing Kennedy, security personnel, and other fans present.
Metcalf's attorney, Mitch Schuster, expressed approval of the decision, stating they are "thankful for the hard work and thorough investigation that led to this just result." However, the matter is not entirely settled. Kennedy has filed a civil lawsuit against Metcalf, which his lawyer confirmed will proceed, with a status conference scheduled for May 5.
The incident occurred in the second quarter of the Steelers' game against the Lions at Ford Field. According to statements, Kennedy approached Metcalf near the stands, holding a Metcalf jersey and seeking an autograph. A brief interaction ensued, during which Metcalf allegedly grabbed Kennedy's shirt and pushed him back. Kennedy reportedly did not appear to be injured and did not seek medical attention at the game.

While prosecutors have closed the criminal aspect, the context surrounding the altercation remains a point of contention. Reports indicate that during an episode of the 'Nightcap' podcast, a claim was made that Kennedy used racial slurs towards Metcalf, an allegation that Kennedy has consistently denied. A spokesperson for the Seahawks, Metcalf's former team, confirmed he had reported a fan to security during a game in Detroit in the past, though they could not specifically link it to this incident or to Kennedy.
The NFL had previously suspended Metcalf for two games without pay following the incident, a ruling he appealed unsuccessfully. He concluded the season with 850 yards and six touchdowns on 59 catches.
