CRITIQUE AIMED AT MURPHY'S DRAMA
Daryl Hannah has publicly rebuked the portrayal of her in Ryan Murphy's FX series, "Love Story." In an essay published in The New York Times, Hannah asserts the show presents a "dramatized portrayal" and employs "textbook misogyny," using her name in a narrative she describes as "tragedy-exploiting." The actress argues that the series fabricates events and misrepresents her relationship with John F. Kennedy Jr., reducing her identity to a mere footnote in his life, while ignoring her extensive work in environmental advocacy and documentary filmmaking. She also states she has been receiving "threatening messages from viewers" due to the show's content.
The series, which has achieved significant viewership and set streaming records for FX, follows the lives and deaths of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette. Hannah, who dated Kennedy Jr. for approximately five years before his marriage to Bessette, contends the show invents aspects of their past, such as her allegedly planting stories in the press or pressuring him into marriage. She explicitly denies such actions, stating, "I have never planted any story in the press. I have never desecrated any family heirloom or intruded upon anyone’s private memorial. I have never pressured anyone into marriage."

AUTHOR'S INTENTION QUESTIONED
Hannah's statement arrives in the wake of similar criticism from JFK Jr.'s nephew, Jack Schlossberg, who characterized the series as a "grotesque display of someone else’s life." The show's creator, Connor Hines, defended his approach, explaining to Variety that consulting the Kennedy family was not pursued, as creative distance is considered more effective for a writer. Conversely, Courtney Hemingway, who portrays Hannah in the series, reportedly sent Hannah a note expressing admiration. Hannah, however, did not reply. Hemingway, daughter of Mariel Hemingway, indicated the project was conceived as a "love story that isn't supposed to be factual."
The actress feels compelled to speak out due to the potential for persistent misinformation online. Hannah has historically maintained a degree of privacy regarding her past relationship with Kennedy Jr., even while reportedly honoring the Kennedy family's desire for discretion. However, she now asserts that the current portrayal forces her hand, particularly given the perceived ease with which falsehoods can be perpetuated and accepted as fact in the digital age. Hannah's objection centers on the perceived exploitation of personal tragedy and the reduction of a woman's identity to her associations, a framing she identifies as a manifestation of "textbook misogyny."
