Francisco Roig, the recently appointed coach to tennis star Iga Świątek, sustained a torn Achilles tendon during a promotional event on a court in a Rome piazza. The incident occurred on Tuesday, preceding Świątek's opening match at the Italian Open. Roig underwent surgery in Warsaw the same day.
The injury transpired during what was described as a casual volleying game between Świątek and Roig, intended to promote the tournament. A bet was reportedly involved, with Świątek holding match point when Roig executed a split step, leading to the rupture. Świątek has only been working with Roig for just over a month, having previously parted ways with coach Wim Fissette.
Despite the physical setback, Roig remained present on court, observing Świątek's first-round match from crutches. Świątek remarked on the team's efforts to support him. The injury has become a point of conversation, with questions arising about its impact on the nascent coaching relationship.
