Chyler Leigh, former costar to the late Eric Dane on Grey's Anatomy, has spoken about the impact of Dane's death, highlighting his dedication to his daughters and his brave stance on living with ALS. Leigh's statements, appearing in various outlets recently, focus on Dane's personal strength and his desire to leave a meaningful legacy.
Leigh detailed Dane's heroic approach to his ALS diagnosis, noting his effort to use his experience to inform others. She also mentioned his upcoming memoir, stating that Dane expressed a wish for his family to have a story they could be proud of, born from his deep love for them. This aspect of his life, his fatherhood and advocacy, forms a significant part of Leigh's recollection.
On-Screen Chemistry and Off-Screen Loss
Leigh, who portrayed Lexie Grey opposite Dane's Mark Sloan on the ABC drama, shared her grief. Dane's character, Mark Sloan, died from injuries sustained in a plane crash in the series' narrative. Leigh's tribute came a few days after Dane's death, which was confirmed on February 19, 2026, at the age of 53.
A Legacy of Warmth and Passion
Leigh described Dane as a "deep, deep man" with a "heart of gold." She also recalled his passion for his work and the causes he championed. Beyond the professional realm, she noted his active participation in a fantasy football league, with members of "The Franklin strip fanatics fantasy football league" expressing their missed presence. His hugs, too, were a point of memorable connection for Leigh.
Other colleagues, such as Kate Walsh, who played Addison Montgomery, spoke of Dane's sensitivity, vulnerability, and intelligence, which contributed to his magnetic screen presence and his ability to be a supportive friend off-set. Producer Krista Vernoff also commented on Dane's impactful presence on the show.
