Police search Cardiff journalist home on Wednesday in probe linked to Chinese espionage

Police searched the home of journalist Martin Shipton in Cardiff this Wednesday. This follows the arrest of three former Labour advisers linked to a national security investigation.

Martin Shipton, an associate editor for Nation.Cymru, confirmed his home in Cardiff was subjected to a forceful police entry via a search warrant. The action, described by Shipton as baffling, is understood to be connected to investigations into alleged espionage activities involving China. Police smashed down his front door during the operation, an event that left the journalist disoriented and proclaiming his innocence.

Shipton stated he provided a voluntary statement to the police and was not arrested. He insists he has no affiliation with the Chinese government and has never been financially involved with them. The raid occurred on Wednesday, and authorities reportedly confiscated his mobile phones, computers, and even vintage cameras belonging to his daughter. Financial records and materials associated with foreign intelligence services were among the items sought. Police also photographed the property during their search.

The journalist acknowledged a past trip to Hong Kong three years ago, which he took with David Taylor, a former Labour Party adviser. Taylor was among three men arrested on suspicion of assisting a foreign intelligence service for China. These individuals, including Taylor (39), Matthew Aplin (43), and Steve Jones (68), have since been released on bail.

The arrests of Taylor and the other two former Labour advisers are part of a counter-terrorism policing investigation operating under the National Security Act. While the police have not officially identified the men, it is understood they are former Labour advisers. Taylor is married to Joani Reid, a Labour MP for East Kilbride and Strathaven. Following her husband's arrest, Reid voluntarily suspended the Labour whip and will not sit as a Labour MP until internal investigations conclude. Reid has stated she has seen nothing to suspect her husband has broken any law and maintains she has had no dealings with Chinese businesses, diplomats, or government employees in her capacity as an MP. She has expressed her belief in freedom of expression and criticized the Chinese Communist Party's system of governance.

Shipton expressed bewilderment, comparing the experience to a "Kafkaesque nightmare." He highlighted the police's agreement to pay for a new front door, a concession he noted amid the distressing events. The investigation has also reportedly seen police search the home of James Robinson, a former aide to ex-Labour deputy leader Lord Tom Watson, in relation to the same probe. Robinson confirmed his home was searched but stated he was not detained, arrested, or questioned.
