CAMBRIDGE, MA – Chaos erupted along Memorial Drive on Monday afternoon when a gunman unleashed fire into moving traffic. At least one individual sustained injuries amidst the shooting spree. Police have since secured the scene and stated there is no ongoing danger to the public, though they urge people to avoid the area.
The incident, which began around 1:30 p.m., saw dozens of vehicles caught in the crossfire. Witnesses described a scene of panic, with some drivers abandoning their cars and fleeing on foot. One witness, Shannon Young, recounted hearing a rifle being discharged into the flow of traffic. His own vehicle was struck, with the driver's side headlight damaged. Another driver reported that his car's radiator was hit after he stopped and crouched inside his vehicle.
A rifle was observed on the grass near the bike path adjacent to the Charles River. The substantial police presence included numerous cruisers from both Massachusetts State Police and Cambridge police departments.

State troopers are working alongside local law enforcement in the investigation. Governor Maura Healey is reportedly monitoring the situation.
The area around Memorial Drive, specifically near the River Street Bridge, was closed to accommodate the large emergency response. Police received multiple 911 calls reporting the gunshots.
The timing of the reports indicates the initial calls came in on Monday, May 11, 2026, with publications ranging from 16 minutes to 23 hours prior to this report.
