Class Can Continue After Non-Commercial Classification Query
A popular free outdoor Pilates class in Brisbane's New Farm Park will continue its operations after facing questions from council staff regarding its commercial classification. The organiser, Keisha Love, confirmed the event, known as 'Pil Lattes', can proceed, albeit with some necessary adjustments following the council's review.
One session of the fortnightly event was cancelled last week. Love informed her followers about this cancellation through Instagram. The class typically draws up to 500 participants on Sunday mornings.
Merchandise Sales Prompt Council Review
The council's intervention reportedly stemmed from inquiries into whether the event was genuinely non-commercial. Keisha Love also sells Pil Lattes branded merchandise, such as hats and jumpers. She stated these sales were not a significant profit-maker but served to help fund the continuation of the event.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner has publicly acknowledged the Pilates classes as a "fantastic initiative." The council's concerns appear to centre on the boundary between a community gathering and a commercial enterprise operating within a public space.

Background: The Rise of Outdoor Fitness
Outdoor fitness classes have seen a surge in popularity, offering accessible and often free or low-cost ways for people to engage in physical activity. These events, while beneficial for community well-being, can sometimes create complexities regarding park usage regulations and commercial activity permits. This situation highlights the ongoing negotiation between the public's desire for such informal gatherings and the administrative structures governing public spaces.
