Foreign Ministers Convene in New Delhi Under India's Chairmanship
Indonesia's Foreign Minister Sugiono arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday, May 13, to attend the BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting. This gathering, hosted by India, marks a significant moment as the nation holds the rotating BRICS chairmanship, a position assumed from Brazil on January 1st of this year.
The meeting, scheduled for May 14-15, will see a convergence of diplomatic heavyweights. Notably, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is also expected in India today. His agenda includes substantive discussions with India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, focusing on key areas of bilateral cooperation. Adding to the high-level participation, Iran's Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi is also slated to attend these crucial deliberations.
Diplomatic Nexus in the Capital
New Delhi finds itself at the centre of global diplomatic activity over the coming days. The BRICS summit presents a platform for ministers to "exchange views on current international and regional issues." A particular emphasis is reportedly placed on "the situation in West Asia." Beyond immediate concerns, the delegates are also set to "compare notes on approaches to cooperation within the UN, BRICS and G20." This underscores a broader intent to synchronize strategies across multiple international forums.

Background to the Gathering
The BRICS grouping, initially comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has evolved to encompass a wider array of nations seeking to influence global governance. India's assumption of the chairmanship signals its active role in shaping the bloc's agenda and its engagement with pressing international matters. The presence of ministers from Indonesia and Iran, while not formal members of the original BRICS five, hints at a potentially expanding scope of engagement or pre-existing diplomatic ties being leveraged within the broader context of these multilateral discussions.
