Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has emerged as the dominant force in the Gujarat local body elections, securing victory in 13 out of 15 municipal corporations. In stark contrast, the Indian National Congress appears to have drawn a blank in these crucial urban governance seats, according to initial results. The counting of votes for over 9,200 seats across 15 municipal corporations, 84 municipalities, 34 district panchayats, and 260 taluka panchayats concluded on April 28, 2026.
The BJP's performance highlights a significant consolidation of power in urban Gujarat, while the Congress faces a critical juncture, struggling to make inroads in these elections. In Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, for instance, the BJP secured a commanding 158 out of 192 seats. The elections, held on April 26, 2026, saw varying voter participation across different tiers of local governance. Municipal corporations recorded a turnout of 55.1 percent, while municipalities saw 65.53 percent. District panchayats registered 66.64 percent, and taluka panchayats witnessed the highest turnout at 67.26 percent. The political contest primarily involved the BJP, Congress, and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), with the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) fielding candidates in specific pockets. Context and Pre-Election Environment
These local body elections are the first to be held following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Gujarat.
