ANDHRA PRADESH – The state government of Andhra Pradesh has announced a target to foster five lakh women entrepreneurs, signalling a shift towards women’s economic participation as a central tenet of its development strategy. This ambition, articulated by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, comes alongside acknowledgements of existing progress, with reports indicating over 1.1 lakh women already heading Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and a previous target of one lakh having been surpassed.

The Chief Minister, speaking around International Women’s Day, framed this initiative within broader themes of societal prosperity and women's empowerment. He highlighted the "hard work, love and sacrifice" attributed to women and noted the presence of three women ministers in the state cabinet, described as working efficiently. These pronouncements were made during official celebrations in Amaravati.

The plan, outlined as a "comprehensive blueprint for women’s economic development and entrepreneurship," appears to extend beyond mere numerical targets. It involves direct engagement from the Chief Minister, who has pledged to act as a brand ambassador for 'Swayam' products, an initiative aimed at globalizing women-led enterprises. Financial backing is also part of the package, with mention of subsidized loans.

Past policies are frequently referenced, including equal property rights for women, the establishment of Padmavathi University for women's education, and 8% reservation in local bodies, attributed to the legacy of NTR. In terms of public services, free bus travel for women has been cited as a mechanism enabling "billions of journeys". The government also indicated a focus on women’s health, specifically awareness campaigns for cervical and breast cancer, positing that "healthy women ensure healthy families and societies."

The scale of the ambition has led to projections of Andhra Pradesh potentially housing six lakh women entrepreneurs, a figure suggested as the highest in the country. This push for 'women led enterprise expansion' places it at the "centre of economic policy."
