Alex Deady, 21, has been found guilty of the murder of Barry Daly, a 44-year-old postman, in Doneraile, Co Cork, last October. The conviction came after a jury at the Central Criminal Court sitting in Cork deliberated for nearly 12 hours.

A 20-year-old man has been convicted of murder following an incident last year in Doneraile, Co Cork. The victim, identified as postman Barry Daly, suffered fatal injuries. A second, younger accused, a 16-year-old, has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in relation to the same event.

The trial heard that the attack occurred after an altercation. According to Deady's statements to gardaí, he was incensed because Daly had allegedly taunted him about an incident involving his girlfriend's teeth. This led Deady and two juveniles to follow Daly to his home. Deady admitted to striking Daly with a golf club, though he claimed it was only once and that he did not intend to kill him. The jury, however, rejected this assertion, finding his actions constituted murder.

"When I left, [Daly] was talking, he was talking, saying you ‘f**k you’…"
Evidence presented during the trial suggested that Daly sustained catastrophic head and facial injuries. A doorbell camera captured Deady on his way from Daly's residence, allegedly expressing anticipation to see the "imprint of the five iron golf club on the victim’s face." Deady and a 17-year-old co-accused had both admitted to the unlawful killing of Daly but denied murder.
