Officers of the West Palm Beach Police Department engaged in an unusual roadside duty recently, apprehending an alligator found in an empty parking lot.
The incident, captured on video and shared by the department, depicts an officer approaching the reptile. He appears to initially use an object, possibly a baton, before directly securing the alligator's jaws with his bare hands. A second officer then assisted, helping to tape the animal's snout shut to ensure its safety during removal. Authorities stated they were responding to reports of an agitated alligator.
The encounter unfolded as Florida’s alligator mating season commences.
This period, typically beginning in early April with mating observed in May and June, can lead to an increase in alligator sightings, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Wildlife officials typically advise the public to maintain a safe distance from these animals, refrain from feeding them, and to contact professionals if an alligator is spotted in areas frequented by people.
Details regarding the ultimate disposition of the captured alligator remain undisclosed. The video shared by the West Palm Beach Police Department included the caption, "Just another day on patrol… until it isn't."
