Visakhapatnam, April 14, 2026 – The Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) has marked the commencement of its annual 'Fire Service Week,' a period dedicated to acknowledging the sacrifices of firefighters and promoting fire safety awareness. The observance, spanning from April 14 to April 20, aligns with National Fire Service Day, an event that historically honors those lost in the 1944 Bombay Dock explosion and subsequent incidents. This year's activities include awareness programs targeting VSP employees, their families, workers, schoolchildren, and the general public. A brochure titled ‘Ensure Fire Safety, Contribute towards Nation Building’ was released, and floral tributes were paid to fallen firefighters.
The ongoing emphasis on fire safety comes at a time when the plant has grappled with a series of fire incidents over the past few years, raising questions about the effectiveness of existing safety protocols and the plant's overall operational resilience.

Arun Kanti Bagchi, RINL Director (Projects) and holding additional charge as Director (Operations), attended the inaugural ceremony. He also highlighted VSP's future prospects as a "Centre of Excellence." The event saw the participation of Chief General Managers and Heads of Departments. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) Fire Wing, stationed at VSP, is central to these observances, underscoring their role in providing fire safety cover to the plant.
Lingering Concerns Over Privatization
The renewed focus on fire safety occurs against a backdrop of employee apprehension regarding potential privatization of firefighting services. An 'Expression of Interest' (EoI) was issued in December 2024, seeking private parties for "Fire Fighting Prevention & Rescue Services" at RINL-VSP, a move that has reportedly caused unease among plant staff. This follows years of VSP operating under significant financial strain and undergoing periods of reduced production, including the closure of furnaces due to raw material shortages.

A History of Fire Incidents
The Visakhapatnam Steel Plant has experienced multiple fire incidents in recent years:
May 23, 2025: A large fire erupted at Steel Melting Shop-II (SMS-II), causing damage to machinery and impacting production.
December 12, 2025: A minor fire occurred in the Steel Melting Shop section due to sparks from metal scrap, quickly extinguished with no injuries reported.
September 24, 2024: A fire at Steel Melting Shop 1 (SMS-1) resulted in serious injuries to Senior Manager Malleswara Rao following a reported steel ladle explosion.
February 17, 2024: A minor fire broke out at the Coke Ovens & Coal Chemical Plant (CO&CCP) unit.
January 21, 2019: A fire occurred in the Steel Melt Shop-2, with hot metal production restored within 36 hours after repairs.
Other incidents include fires reported in November 2020 and an unspecified date in March 2026 related to CISF activities.
Operational and Financial Volatility
VSP has been contending with significant operational challenges. Blast Furnace-1 (BF-1) resumed operations in October 2024 after a six-month shutdown, with plans to increase daily production. However, by September 2024, the plant was on the brink of a total shutdown, with two out of its three furnaces non-operational due to a critical shortage of coking coal and financial constraints. The plant has also faced difficulties in meeting salary obligations for its employees.
CISF's Role and Observances
The CISF’s role in industrial security and safeguarding critical infrastructure at VSP has been consistently highlighted. In March 2026, the CISF Raising Day was celebrated at the plant, with the Chairman and Managing Director of RINL commending the force for its commitment to security and maintaining a safe environment. This annual observance of Fire Service Week, therefore, serves as a recurring platform to reinforce safety messages amidst these complex operational and administrative circumstances.
