Disorderly scenes have erupted across several continents as the recent launch of a limited-edition Swatch watch collection triggered violent altercations and mass gatherings. Reports indicate widespread chaos outside Swatch retail locations, forcing store closures and police intervention in multiple cities.
The global commotion stems from the release of eight new timepieces, a collaboration between Swatch and luxury watchmaker Audemars Piguet. These watches, described as blending Audemars Piguet's classic 'Royal Oak' design with Swatch's 'Pop' aesthetic and made from bioceramic material, are available at only 220 stores worldwide.
Incidents have been reported in various European cities, including Birmingham, Paris, Cardiff, Milan, and near The Hague in the Netherlands. In Birmingham, authorities imposed a dispersal order to manage the hundreds who congregated outside a Swatch store. Similar situations unfolded in Cardiff, where police responded to reports of around 300 people gathered before opening. Milan witnessed fights breaking out at store opening, and in the Netherlands, police intervened at a shopping centre. Footage also emerged of disturbances in London and Bangkok, with crowds demonstrating unrest in locations such as Dallas, Texas and Cannes.

The highly sought-after nature of these watches, coupled with their limited availability, appears to be the primary driver behind the intense public response. Enthusiasts reportedly queued for hours, anticipating the sales, with the situation escalating as crowds grew restless and frustrated by the store closures and inability to purchase the items. Some reports suggest the use of tear gas during the French launch.
This recent surge in volatile consumer behaviour around exclusive product releases occurs against a backdrop of a reported increase in luxury watch theft across Europe. While not directly linked, the high demand and perceived value of such items have, in recent years, become a focus for criminal activity, with instances of street attacks and broad-daylight robberies on watch owners on the rise.
