The Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks delivered a decisive performance against the Gold Coast Titans in the opening round of the 2026 NRL season. The match, held at Shark Park, saw the home side mount a strong offensive display, leaving the Titans with a sobering reality check in their first outing.

Key incidents included a critical loss of possession by the Titans during an attacking set late in the first half, which directly led to a Sharks turnover and subsequent advantage. Early tactical kicking by the Titans also proved ineffective, with kicks going astray and outside backs apparently unaware of ongoing plays.

The Sharks' dominance was underscored by their ability to capitalize on errors. One Sharks player, Nicho Hynes, was instrumental, scoring two tries. His first came from a high kick that the Titans failed to defend, and a second followed a "majestic move" involving Hynes that saw him break through the defence unchallenged.

A further scoring opportunity for the Sharks arose when Titans player Lachlan Ilias, filling in for an injured player, sent a restart sailing out on the full, directly resulting in a Sharks try. During this play, Titans captain Tino Fa’asuamaleaui was placed on report for a shoulder charge on Sharks player Blayke Brailey.
The match marked the first game for new Titans coach Josh Hannay.
The game took place on March 7, 2026.
