Doc Focuses on Film's Impact, Studio Eyes Unproduced Screenplays
Magenta Light Studios, a company aiming to support independent films lacking distribution, is re-releasing the documentary ‘Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror’. This move, according to CEO Bob Yari, is intended to highlight the original film's cultural significance and potentially pave the way for a new narrative feature. The studio sees the documentary's re-release as a way to underscore the original film's "impactful" role in helping individuals with identity struggles find a sense of belonging. Yari expressed that his own initial underestimation of the film's reach led him to believe this was a project worth pursuing.
The documentary, directed by Linus O’Brien, son of Rocky Horror creator Richard O’Brien, delves into the phenomenon of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. It features interviews with key figures including Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Lou Adler, and Barry Bostwick. The film aims to explore how the 1975 musical science fiction comedy became a global sensation, transcending generations. Celebrated fans such as Jack Black and Trixie Mattel also offer personal reflections on the film's enduring influence.

Magenta Light Studios is reportedly seeking a director and considering casting for a new narrative film, although no production company is yet attached. Yari mentioned that the studio occasionally backs and produces films itself, referencing their prior release, “Strange Darling.” This suggests a potential for Magenta Light to invest directly in the new narrative project. The re-release of ‘Strange Journey’ appears to serve as a strategic prelude, aiming to re-ignite interest in the Rocky Horror legacy before launching a new cinematic endeavor.
