The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), a constituent of the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala, is asserting its demand for three additional constituencies to contest in the upcoming Assembly elections. This push for an increased share of seats, driven by the party's stated recognition of its "growing social base," stands in stark contrast to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM)'s insistence on maintaining the existing seat-sharing arrangement.
The RJD's state leadership, following a meeting in Kozhikode, has explicitly stated its claim for constituencies beyond its previous allocation. While the party contested in Koothuparamba, Vadakara, and Kalpetta in the last elections, it now seeks Koduvally, Kovalam, and Chalakudy. This demand is underpinned by a narrative that the party's electoral performance warrants a broader platform within the LDF.
However, the CPM has reportedly conveyed its unwillingness to concede even a single additional seat to the RJD. Sources indicate the CPM leadership views the current distribution as settled, a stance reiterated as seat-sharing talks progress within the LDF. This rigidity from the CPM, characterized as an insistence on "status quo," signals a potential deepening of the rift between the two alliance partners.
Local Discontent within RJD
The RJD's intensified demand is also occurring against a backdrop of internal dissent. In Kozhikode, RJD's North and South mandalam committees have reportedly informed the state leadership of their non-cooperation with the LDF in the impending elections. This localized discontent appears to stem from perceived electoral setbacks in recent local body elections, with some party units blaming the CPM for alleged sabotage.
Despite these internal frictions and accusations of compromised credibility, the RJD's state leadership has affirmed its commitment to remaining within the LDF fold. A recent State committee meeting in Kozhikode reportedly quelled a rebellion by several district units that had considered defecting to the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF).
Historical Context and Seat Demands
The RJD's aspiration for more seats is not new. Party officials recall past discussions where demands for increased allocation were met with considerations of alliance dynamics, such as the inclusion of other regional parties. The current request, articulated by RJD state secretary general Varughese George, specifically targets seats in Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur, and Kozhikode, reflecting strategic regional ambitions.
The CPM, while acknowledging past assurances, appears to be prioritizing its own established arrangements in the current negotiations. The party's position is expected to be further deliberated upon by the CPI State Executive Committee, where final decisions regarding the LDF's electoral configuration will be consolidated.
The Kerala Legislative Assembly, comprising 140 members, is slated for elections in April 2026, with the tenure of the incumbent assembly set to conclude in May 2026. The previous elections saw the CPM-led LDF secure a decisive mandate, winning 99 out of 140 seats.
