Actor-filmmaker Riteish Deshmukh has issued a sharp condemnation of remarks concerning Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, labelling them as "distorted nonsense," "unacceptable," and "infuriating." His strong statements come amidst a growing controversy surrounding comments made by Dhirendra Krishna Shastri, popularly known as Bageshwar Baba.
Deshmukh, an avowed admirer and devotee of Shivaji Maharaj, expressed his anger via a post on X (formerly Twitter), articulating his sentiments in Marathi. He likened attempts to misrepresent the Maratha king's legacy to futile efforts destined to be forgotten, asserting that Shivaji Maharaj's name, like the enduring Sahyadri mountains, will last for millennia. The actor's outburst coincides with the impending release of his film, 'Raja Shivaji', where he portrays the titular historical figure. The film is slated for a theatrical debut on May 1st.
The controversy erupted after Bageshwar Baba reportedly made remarks that have been widely criticized for distorting historical facts about Shivaji Maharaj. These comments have drawn ire from various quarters, including historians, political figures, and the public. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut also weighed in, criticizing the remarks and questioning the silence of certain organizational leaders.

Riteish Deshmukh not only stars in the film but has also directed it. His son, Rahyl Deshmukh, makes his debut in the film, playing the role of the young Shivaji. The ensemble cast includes notable actors such as Sanjay Dutt, Abhishek Bachchan, Vidya Balan, Bhagyashree, and Boman Irani. The film is produced by Riteish and Genelia Deshmukh's Mumbai Film Company in collaboration with Jio Studios.
