DRAMATIC SHAKEUP FOLLOWS DISAPPOINTING START TO SEASON
Boston, MA - Hours after a resounding victory, the Boston Red Sox on Saturday evening enacted a sweeping dismissal of manager Alex Cora and five members of his coaching staff. The decision arrives amid a starkly underperforming 10-17 season, leaving the team languishing in last place in the AL East.
The firings, which also include hitting coach Peter Fatse, third-base coach Kyle Hudson, bench coach Ramón Vázquez, assistant hitting coach Dillon Lawson, and major-league hitting strategy coach Joe Cronin, were announced just 27 games into the 2026 campaign. This marks the first managerial ousting in Major League Baseball this season.
The club appointed Chad Tracy, previously manager of the AAA Worcester Red Sox, as interim manager. He is slated to make his Red Sox managerial debut on Sunday against the Orioles. Jason Varitek, tasked with game planning and run prevention, will reportedly be reassigned.

The Red Sox's season began with a win on Opening Day, but this early success quickly dissolved into a broader pattern of struggle. Despite a 2-8 start following that initial triumph, the team's performance has remained largely anemic across most facets of the game. The dramatic personnel changes occurred mere hours after the team secured what was described as its "most convincing win of the season," a 17-1 blowout against the Baltimore Orioles.
Cora's tenure with the Red Sox has been marked by inconsistency over the past four-plus years. His overall record as manager stands at 620-541, including a 18-10 mark in the postseason. This dismissal follows a previous incident where Cora was suspended for one season by Major League Baseball, a period during which he stepped down from his managerial role, and the team ultimately agreed he should resign.
