Puttaparthi Gears Up for High-Profile Visit and Defence Initiative
PUTTAPARTHI, MAY 13, 2026 — A significant security posture is being established in Puttaparthi for the May 15 visit of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. The duo are slated to lay the foundation stone for a substantial ₹1 lakh crore fifth-generation fighter aircraft manufacturing project, spanning 650 acres within the Sri Sathya Sai district. The review of security arrangements, including barricading, parking, entry points, and crowd management, was conducted by Satish Kumar at the district police office. Preparations also included security for IT Minister Nara Lokesh's visit on May 14 to Battalapalli for a hospital program.
The heightened security focus on Naidu follows recent directives from Director General of Police Harish Kumar Gupta to implement "uncompromising implementation of security protocols" after a high-level review initiated subsequent to an event labelled 'Operation Sindhoor'. This directive, shared with Intelligence Chief Mahesh Chandra Laddha and senior officials, underscores an ongoing assessment of VIP security.

Defence and Security Discourse Intertwined
Naidu's engagement with Singh, particularly around the defence manufacturing project, occurs against a backdrop of the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister's vocal support for 'Operation Sindoor'. Naidu had previously lauded the initiative, framing it as a confidence-building measure for the armed forces. The proposal for significant defence infrastructure projects in Andhra Pradesh, including additional Sainik Schools, aligns with Prime Minister Modi's emphasis on indigenous defence equipment.
The evolving security landscape for Naidu is notable. Reports from January 2024 detailed security personnel averting a fall from an overcrowded stage. More recently, the deployment of autonomous drones for surveillance at his residence, a measure reportedly aimed at maximizing security with minimal staff, highlights a push towards technological integration.
Shifting Security Paradigms
There are indications of potential shifts in VVIP security protocols. Reports from October 2024 suggested a policy decision to phase out the use of National Security Guard (NSG) commandos for VVIP duties, redirecting their focus to counter-terrorism operations. This move could affect Naidu, who, as a prominent leader from Southern India with active public engagement, has been among those receiving NSG protection.

The Indian government has reportedly made a policy decision to phase out the use of National Security Guard (NSG) commandos for VVIP security, shifting the focus of NSG personnel back to their core mission of counter-terrorism and special operations.
The context of security also includes political undertones. In January 2026, Jagan Reddy, former Chief Minister, reportedly criticized Naidu's efforts regarding the capital city status of Amaravati. Furthermore, a September 2025 report mentioned Naidu commencing use of a new, high-tech helicopter, the Airbus H-160, ostensibly to enhance security and reduce travel time.
This period has seen Naidu championing defence production in Andhra Pradesh while concurrently, directives for tightened security measures for him have been issued by the state's DGP. The foundation stone laying ceremony for the fighter aircraft manufacturing facility serves as a focal point for these concurrent developments in infrastructure, defence policy, and security apparatus adjustments.
