Portsmouth FC is experiencing a significant churn in its playing staff, with several key figures departing or on the verge of leaving the club. This comes as Portsmouth has secured promotion back to the Championship after a prolonged absence. The departures mark a shift for the club as it navigates a new league landscape.
Several players have already departed Fratton Park, including established names like Sean Raggett, who ended a five-year tenure with 239 appearances. Joe Rafferty also left after 68 outings. This exodus follows a previous instance where midfielder Mingi refused a three-year contract offer in 2023, indicating his intent to leave, with Charlton Athletic noted as a potential destination then.
The club's retained list, published in May 2024, confirmed the exit of several "key players" while indicating ongoing negotiations with others, namely Joe Morrell and Zak Swanson. Captain Marlon Pack and defender Connor Ogilvie were reportedly offered contract extensions.

Further complicating the squad's stability, Zak Swanson, a full-back, agreed to a one-year deal in the summer of 2024, which includes an option for an additional year. This arrangement means he is slated to become a free agent again in the summer of 2025 unless circumstances change. Swanson has had limited game time, featuring in only eight matches since his arrival.
Recent reports, though with lower priority status, suggest a potential further wave of departures in the summer of 2025, with as many as four players possibly leaving if conditions remain unaltered. An earlier, low-priority report from January 2024 also hinted at a Portsmouth player being eyed by a European club.
