Path of Exile 2's latest update, 'Return of the Ancients', introduces a significant restructuring of its endgame experience. The patch aims to provide a more deliberate and structured progression, offering players greater control over their gameplay. The update introduces five new storylines, a reworked Atlas system with new mechanics, and a host of new bosses and endgame areas. This overhaul touches upon various facets of the game, including crafting systems, league mechanics, and Ascendancies, fundamentally altering how players navigate endgame content.
The 'Return of the Ancients' update includes the addition of ten new endgame bosses and five new pinnacle bosses, alongside 30 new endgame areas. The Atlas encounter system has been re-worked, with specific zones now focusing on mechanics like Abyss (East), Expedition (Southeast), and Delirium (West). Players can now select Atlas Classes, granting bonuses when entering maps or endgame areas, and Precursor Relays unlock points on a new Atlas passive tree.

New mechanics such as the Runic Ward system and rune-crafting are highlighted as significant additions, allowing for new ways to engage with the game's systems. Players are presented with options to customize their experience, including manifesting illusions with assigned skills or permanently manifesting bells that ring on critical strikes. The update also offers the ability to choose one of three Atlas masters – Jado, Hilda, or Doriyani – who impart their unique skills upon completion of their missions.
Grinding Gear Games, the developer, has also streamlined the campaign's completion process, intended to make it easier for new players to reach the endgame. This aims to address the issue of new players feeling overwhelmed by the complexity of endgame progression and multiple features. The structured nature of the endgame is intended to provide a clearer sense of accomplishment and a defined point to transition between game cycles, a departure from the perceived grind of the previous endgame.

The update introduces new league mechanics tied to specific points on the map, ensuring that older content can be experienced in a fresh manner. The 'Return of the Ancients' league mechanics are described as remnants of a "Primeval Civilization." The update includes quality-of-life improvements and aims to offer a more adaptive endgame, allowing players to shift their focus based on build goals or content preferences. This includes the option to influence drop rates or encounter difficulty, with potential rewards tied to these choices, such as double unique drops from pinnacle bosses in exchange for a single attempt.
The 'Return of the Ancients' update is available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. It is described as a DLC update for 'Path of Exile 2'.
