AUTHORITIES DETAIN SPANISH-LANGUAGE REPORTER, LEGAL CHALLENGES MOUNT
Estefany Rodriguez Florez, a reporter for the Spanish-language publication Nashville Noticias, was taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following a traffic stop in Nashville. ICE maintains Florez lacked legal immigration status and had missed scheduled appointments. Her legal team contends she was not presented with an arrest warrant at the time of her detention, only an immigration notice to appear. Florez remains in ICE custody as her case progresses through federal court, with her attorneys seeking her immediate release.
ICE stated that Florez will be held pending her immigration proceedings. The agency claims she had twice failed to appear for scheduled meetings regarding her immigration case. Florez's lawyer claims one meeting was rescheduled due to a winter storm, and another because an ICE agent could not locate the appointment in the system. A new meeting has reportedly been scheduled for March 17th. Florez's visa authorization has expired, according to Department of Homeland Security records.

BACKGROUND OF ARREST AND LEGAL ARGUMENTS
Florez, who reports on local issues for Nashville Noticias, claims she fled Colombia after receiving death threats related to her reporting on regional crime. Her asylum application is reportedly based on these threats. Her attorneys are arguing that the handling of her arrest violated her constitutional rights. The National Association of Hispanic Journalists has spoken out against the detention, calling for Florez's release and criticizing what they describe as tactics that impede news coverage.
Florez's legal team has highlighted that she was presented with an immigration notice to appear, not a judicial arrest warrant, during the traffic stop. Her colleague, Araceli Crescencio, noted that Florez was in a vehicle marked as a station car at the time of her detainment. Florez's expired tourist visa, as per DHS records, forms part of ICE's justification for her detention.
