Key Frontcourt Additions Take Center Stage
Tennessee's basketball program is making a pronounced effort to solidify its frontcourt, with significant attention drawn to recent developments. The program has officially announced the signing of center Miles Rubin, a 6-foot-10 transfer from Loyola (Chicago), known for his rim protection capabilities. Rubin, a two-time Atlantic 10 All-Defensive Team honoree, brings a defensive presence reminiscent of the departed Felix Okpara. His commitment, announced on April 12, 2026, came after an official visit and over offers from Clemson, Syracuse, and Marquette.
"The 6-foot-10 center gives Tennessee rim protection and some of the same things that Felix Okpara gave them the last two years."
Further fueling speculation and bolstering the program's recruitment efforts, Tennessee is reportedly hosting Favour Ibe, a 7-foot-1 center from Mt. Zion Prep Academy, for a visit this past weekend. While Ibe may need to add some physical strength, his size alone presents a significant developmental opportunity.
Ongoing Recruitment and Roster Building
The acquisition of Rubin, who recorded a 14.1% block percentage last season, leading the nation according to KenPom, and earned A-10 All-Rookie Team honors, addresses a clear need for the Vols following Okpara's departure. Rubin's stats at Loyola Chicago included averaging 11.3 points and 7.1 rebounds last season, with 15 double-figure rebound games and 10 double-doubles.

Beyond Rubin, reports suggest Tennessee is actively pursuing other frontcourt players. Juke Harris, a 4-star recruit from Maryland, is also a target. On3’s Chris Low has indicated Harris is likely headed to Tennessee, with some intel suggesting a commitment this week. Landing Harris would be a considerable boost to the roster.
"While landing Harris would be a major addition for Tennessee, the frontcourt remains the biggest area of need."
Strategic Roster Maneuvering
Head coach Rick Barnes appears to be taking a hands-on approach in completing the team's roster for the upcoming season. The team has already secured commitments from other transfer portal players, including Chicago native Dai Dai Ames. However, with only three forward-type players currently on the roster, the priority remains adding depth and talent in the frontcourt.
The defensive prowess of Miles Rubin is particularly noted, with his career block total at Loyola Chicago nearing Felix Okpara's tenure at Tennessee. Okpara, who spent two seasons with the Volunteers, became a fan favorite and was clear about Tennessee being a strong developmental environment. The program's strategic moves in the transfer portal and recruitment landscape highlight a focused approach to rebuilding key positional areas.
