New York Mets have secured catcher Luis Torrens with a two-year contract extension worth $11.5 million. The deal, announced on Saturday, keeps the 30-year-old backstop with the team through the 2028 season. This agreement comes on Torrens' birthday and ensures he will continue as the primary backup to Francisco Alvarez.
The extension highlights Torrens' significant value as a defensive specialist, a role that has become increasingly crucial for the Mets. Reports indicate his defensive metrics are top-tier:
He ranked sixth in the majors in fielding run value behind the plate last season.
His average pop time to second base was 1.87 seconds last year, fourth fastest in MLB, and he's leading the majors this year with a 1.86-second average in limited attempts.
Torrens was a Gold Glove finalist last season despite playing in only 86 games as a catcher.
He has also been recognized for his framing abilities, ranking 16th among catchers in framing runs saved with the Mets.
Defensively, he has caught 44 percent of attempted base stealers (37 of 84) since joining the team.
Torrens, now in his ninth major league season and third with the Mets, has been a steady presence, particularly when Alvarez has been sidelined. Despite his defensive prowess, his offensive output has been inconsistent. This season, he is hitting .200 with a .467 OPS in limited plate appearances. Over his time with the Mets, his slash line is .225/.281/.347.

The contract extension is seen as a pragmatic move by the Mets, particularly given their overall spending and the current standing of the team. Torrens was slated to become a free agent at the end of the current season. He was acquired by the Mets in a cash transaction from the Yankees in May 2024.
