Memphis, TN – A local nonprofit focused on child literacy has seen a notable increase in financial contributions in the wake of the death of Brandon Clarke, a forward for the Memphis Grizzlies. The organization, ARISE2Read, confirmed a surge in donations following announcements of Clarke's passing on May 12th.
Clarke, who died on May 11th in Los Angeles at the age of 29, had previously supported ARISE2Read, making a donation in September 2025, during his tenure with the Grizzlies. His death, officially announced by the team and his agency, Priority Sports, has prompted this wave of support for the literacy initiative.
The cause of Clarke's death remains under investigation, with reports indicating drug paraphernalia was found at his residence. Authorities have stated an autopsy is planned. This follows an arrest on April 1, 2026, for possession of a controlled substance, fleeing, and excessive speeding in Arkansas, for which he was released on bond.

Clarke, a Canadian-American player, spent his entire seven-year NBA career with the Memphis Grizzlies. His time in the league was marked by accolades, including being named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 2020. He also played college basketball at Gonzaga, transferring from San Jose State.
Reports from his teammates and those who knew him describe Clarke as a player with a "warm, kind spirit," who brought "joy to all of those in his life" and was a supportive presence. His departure leaves a void within the team and the broader Memphis community. ARISE2Read has not detailed the specific amount of donations received, but acknowledged the impact of the public's response.
