A new, temporary program called the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge has been announced, aiming to offer eligible beneficiaries access to certain GLP-1 medications for weight loss at a reduced cost. The program, slated to begin on July 1, 2026, represents a significant shift in Medicare's stance on covering weight-loss drugs, a category previously excluded by law.
The Bridge program will operate independently of traditional Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage and is considered a demonstration initiative. While specific details are still emerging, eligibility is anticipated to require beneficiaries to be enrolled in Medicare Part D or a Medicare Advantage plan offering drug coverage. Furthermore, recipients will likely need to meet certain body mass index (BMI) criteria, potentially a BMI of 35 or greater, or a BMI of 27 or greater with co-occurring health conditions. A prior authorization process will also be a prerequisite, necessitating physician confirmation of treatment necessity.

Program Details and Eligibility
The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge will be accessible nationwide, extending to all states and territories. Beneficiaries enrolled in specific Medicare Part D plans, including Special Needs Plans (SNPs), employer/union group waiver plans (EGWPs), and the Limited Income Newly Eligible Transition (LI NET) program, are eligible. Dually-eligible individuals who meet the criteria for these Part D plans will also have access.
However, certain plan types are excluded from direct participation unless they also enroll in a standalone prescription drug plan (PDP). These include private fee-for-service plans, section 1876 cost contract plans, section 1833 health care prepayment plans, PACE organizations, fallback plans, and religious fraternal benefit plans.
Cost and Drug Inclusion
While the precise cost structure is still being finalized, one report suggests eligible individuals might pay around $50 per month for these medications through the Bridge program. The program, however, will not encompass all available GLP-1 drugs; a specific list of included medications is expected to be released by Medicare.

Historically, Medicare has been legally barred from covering medications primarily prescribed for weight loss.
