FOOTBALL CLUB ADJUSTS FAN SEATING, TICKET COSTS
Manchester United is enacting a strategy to increase revenue by raising ticket prices by approximately 5% across Old Trafford and reconfiguring seating to create more premium "hospitality" areas. This move involves relocating several hundred fans from desirable seats, specifically those behind the dugouts, to accommodate these higher-paying clientele. The club cites the need for financial sustainability, to counter inflation and rising costs, and to fund investment in both the team and stadium facilities, with the stated aim of returning to "the top of domestic and European football."

Financial Realignments and Fan Discontent
The price increase, averaging just over £2 ($2.70) per game for adult season ticket holders, marks the fourth consecutive year of hikes, despite previous season ticket prices being frozen for eleven campaigns. This decision has drawn criticism from fan groups, including the Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST), who have spoken out against both the price rises and the displacement of long-standing supporters.

The club states that these adjustments are necessary to balance affordability with the requirement to generate revenue for competitiveness. They also highlight a commitment to freezing prices for under-16s, reflecting an effort to maintain accessibility for younger generations, following consultations with the Fans' Advisory Board.

In tandem with the ticket price adjustment, Manchester United is also implementing a new ticket categorization model for non-season ticket holders, designating certain "premium games" for higher pricing. Furthermore, a minimum usage requirement for season ticket holders is being raised from 15 to 16 of their 19 Premier League home matches.

A Shifting Landscape
These changes occur against a backdrop where the club has not won the Premier League title since 2013 and seeks to bolster its standing. The Football Supporters' Association had previously urged clubs to refrain from increasing ticket prices for a two-year period. Manchester United's stance emphasizes that these measures are part of a broader effort to reinvest in the squad and improve infrastructure, aiming to enhance the fan experience while ensuring the club's financial viability in a challenging economic climate. The club also asserts a commitment to consulting with fan representatives on future changes.
